Fun Facts About Munich’s Oktoberfest

Anyone with the faintest interest in beer will know those brew lovers from around the world gather every year in Munich, Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest event runs from September through October, with only beers which conform to German purity and regulations served here, brewed within the limits of Munich.

Over the past decade, the Oktoberfest event has attracted an average of six million visitors a year who between them consume about seven million liters of beer and munch through thousands of grilled sausages, chicken and grilled pretzels- and for those looking to soak it all up, wild oxen. The festival runs over two weeks and is held annually in a meadow just outside of Munich. In addition, visitors can enjoy colorful parades and fairground rides. Below are five fun facts about Munich’s Oktoberfest.

1. IT WASN’T ORIGINALLY A BEER FESTIVAL
The first Oktoberfest was held in honor of the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, in the year 1810. The event is 207 years now, still going strong.

2. NOBODY RAISES THEIR MUG UNTIL THE MAYOR SAYS SO
Since the 1950’s, the festival only began after the official gun salute with the mayor shouting O’ zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”) and provides the first mug to the Minister- President of the State of Bavaria. Only after this can the festival begin. The last festival was on the 16th of September with the mayor tapping the keg to officially start the festival.

3. MUNICH BEER ONLY
Oktoberfest is a tradition for Bavarian tradition only so the only beer you find during the festival is brewed within the limits of Munich. Only beer brewed within the limits of Munich fits this criteria and is considered for Oktoberfest. Munich beer is considered one of the best beer in the world and according to Bavarian Purity Requirements, only 3 ingredients are used in the brewing process: water, barley and hops.

4. THEY HAVE CANCELLED IT 24 TIMES
You can’t stop pouring beer and in over 200 years of the Oktoberfest event, it has been cancelled only 24 times and the cancellations were only due to war and cholera epidemics.

5. 1.8 MILLION GALLONS OF BEER IS CONSUMED
If you are wondering how much beer is consumed by the 6 million persons which attend Oktoberfest yearly, it’s 1.8 million. This is similar to filling the King’s Pond pool at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Hawaii with brew.

6. VOMIT PROOF SNEAKERS ARE AVAILABLE AT OKTOBERFEST
Obviously, with the amount of beer consumed at Oktoberfest, it’s obvious that some persons might feel sick and end up puking. For this reason, Adidas recently released a limited edition of vomit-proof sneakers designed just for Oktoberfest.

7. PARIS HILTON IS PERMANENTLY BANNED FROM OKTOBERFEST
Celebrity Paris Hilton went to the Oktoberfest event dressed in a golden and shiny Bavarian Drindl designed to promote a brand of local wine. Locals at the Oktoberfest event got the organizers to ban Paris Hilton because they were offended by how she was dressed.
