2017 has been a great year for television already. With cartoons like Rick and Morty causing pop-culture waves, and epic shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones continuing their excellence, there’s tons of stuff to watch. There’s only so many hours in the day, so as a television viewer, you’ll have to make some choices.
5. Stranger Things (Season 2)
This Netflix original captured the hearts of the masses when it debuted last year, and the follow up season is right around the corner. One of the highest anticipated shows of 2017, Stranger Things blends 80’s nostalgia with mysterious intrigue to produce strong characters and endearing relationships. With a lovable cast of kids and fantastic performances across the board, Stranger Things is a sure-fire hit that you won’t want to miss. The second season releases (in its entirety) on October 27th, only on Netflix.
Procedural police dramas are a dime a dozen, especially when it concerns television. Producer David Fincher (best known for his directorial work on films such as Gone Girl and Fight Club) manages to craft an excellent story within the often cliché genre. Following an elite agent in the FBI, Mindhunter takes a close look at the psyche of horrendous criminals, all in an effort to better understand them. Packed with twisting plot lines and incredibly cinematic visuals, Mindhunter is already a hit. You can watch the entire first season on Netflix right now.
3. The Walking Dead (Season 8)
If there’s one show that is synonymous with zombies, it’s AMC’s The Walking Dead. Originally starting back in 2010, this drama set in a world destroyed by a zombie virus, has earned massive levels of popularity. Fans have followed the lives of protagonist Rick and his son Carl through plenty of ups and downs, and the series is well known for its surprising plot twists and graphic violence. After the events of season 7, fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens next. You can join them when The Walking Dead returns on October 22nd.
2. The Deuce
With a star-studded cast, The Deuce examines New York City in the 1970’s and 1980’s. At the time, prostitution and pornography were blossoming industries. Equal parts sleazy and classy, The Deuce pairs riveting drama with the rise of the American pornography industry. With fantastic performances from James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and countless others, you’ll easily become wrapped up in the characters and stories within. The Deuce is already underway on HBO, with new episodes releasing on Sundays.
1. The Punisher
Another Netflix original, The Punisher is a standalone series for the popular character first seen on Marvel’s Daredevil. The character has seen several iterations in film over the past few years, but none of them have been quite as well received as this one. Fans have long awaited to see the classic revenge tale get its own time to shine, and that time has come. We’re still unsure when we get to see Frank Castle avenge his family, but it’ll be sometime soon in 2017. Until then, we eagerly await his return.
